Activity Report – 1st October 2018 to 31st October 2018
Manor Fisheries is now closed for the winter period and we open again next year on Saturday 23rd March 2019. During this period there are many tasks to complete including management of the lakes through netting/electro stunning, cutting back trees and improvement of several swims. In addition a new and improved Lake 1 (Carp) and Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish) daily winter fish feeding programme is being undertaken using an initial 1,000Kg of high quality of feed.
Over the coming weeks we plan to keep you informed of progress and receiving your comments and/or ideas.
Netting and electro stunning 16th October
Lake 1 (Carp) – The Hadlow College team consisting of 2 x lecturers and 16 x students, led by Brian Bailey - Commercial Fisheries Manager, arrived on a glorious Tuesday 16th October equipped with both Seine nets and electro-fishing equipment. Some two dozen Carp ranging from 8lbs to 10lbs were rehomed to Lake 3 (Mixed) along with several smaller Carp and Roach. Of note these smaller Carp weighing around a 1 lb each and were 2 to 3 years old indicating successful breeding of Carp in Lake 1.
Disappointingly Cats are still breeding and appearing in Lake 1 (Carp) as some 25 x small Cats (including 8 in the 4lbs range) were caught. These were all safely rehomed to Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish).
Work Party – 17th October
General grounds and islands maintenance was carried out during sunny weather on Wednesday 17th October when a Work Party armed with chain saws, sharp gardening saws and long poled loppers tirelessly removed an enormous quantity of overhanging branches from Lake 3 (Mixed) and Lake 1 (Carp).
This activity will reduce the number of break offs and expose more sunlight to previously over grown areas of the lakes. We extend our thanks to David Hodge, Kevin Oxley, Terry Keard and Jason Tuckey who all volunteered to assist in this annual task.
Fishing Report – 6 months ending 30th September 2018
Experiencing great autumnal weather Terry Keard participated in the last fishing session for this season and found the fish feeding actively. Five days on Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish) produced 19 x Cats including 2 x PB’s to 39lbs 8ozs and then 39lbs 9ozs with a total of 8 x 30’s. Terry then fished a further five days on Lake 1 (Carp) and finished with 29 x Commons to 17lbs 12ozs and 10 x Mirrors to 17lbs 6ozs.
Lake 1 (Carp) - 2018
Throughout 2018 Carp doubles have continued to show in greater numbers plus 22 x 20lbs+ landings recorded. The 2019 Season should prove to be even better when the present 150+ doubles continue to grow via our new and improved winter feeding programme.
Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish) - 2018
2018 has been a record 6-month season recording 5 x all-time record months for April, May, June, July and September. The picture below provides a visual summary over the past 4-years and illustrates the number of 30lbs+ Catfish has increased by 40% over 2017; resulting in an average of 100 x Cats over 30lbs+ per month.
With Lake 2 limited to a daily maximum of 4-anglers and the daily average number of 30lbs+ cats caught is now 3+, the daily chance of each angler landing a 30lbs+ Cat is statistically better than 75%.
The challenge now is to increase the number of 40’s and encourage them grow to become 50’s via our new and improved winter feeding programme.
Lake 3 (Mixed) - 2018
Some notable fish were caught this year include a 6lbs 15ozs Bream and a 20lbs Carp plus a 5-hour match winning weight of 128lbs. During this year it has again been notable that the Carp have grown significantly in weight while the number of Crayfish caught has dropped greatly. In addition we are undertaking a winter feeding programme.
Cabin Log Book
In addition to recording Cats weighing over 30lbs, and please don’t be shy ……. we request anglers also detail and record Carp over 20lbs. This is important as it forms the basis of our Monthly News Report and provides valuable input to our lake management plans.
Thank you to all those anglers who have spent a few moments to summarise their catch in the Cabin Log Book this year.
