From Autumn to Sun to Winter

During this late autumnal November, I travelled to a warm Mexico to return early to a freezing December. Following a longish flight via Dallas to San Jose del Cabo and via road to Los Barriles, Baja California; I joined my sons Clive and Iain for a holiday that included four full days of sea fishing. The travel, accommodation and fishing were all again superbly arranged by Sportquest Travel (also see website at NEWS Jan’16 - Belize and Feb’12 – Costa Rica).

globe.jpg
base.jpg

Our fishing plans were to try catching game fish such as Dorado, Billfish or Roosterfish and the evenings sampling great local food, Corona, IPA and finishing with a few frames of pool.

ipa.jpg

With excitement high, each morning we boarded our boat at around 6.30 am to meet our experienced Captain and skilled deck hand. Before departing each morning we discussed and set a plan for each 8 hour adventure. With the noon temperature around 82°+F we divided our time between fishing inshore some 100 to 200 yards from the beach and venturing offshore some 10 to 15 miles to blue water.

The results of trolling fish baits (Bonito and Skipjack) plus large plugs offshore proved successful and hectic sport resulted from using sardine fish baits inshore:

Lakes Management

Historically and risking a very heavy Environmental Agency fine, a misguided angler(s) unfortunately relocated Catfish into Lakes 1 and 3. As a result these lakes are regularly checked to determine if any are still present and require rehoming. It goes without saying that Members have a duty to report to Manor Fisheries any illegal movement of Catfish and if any Catfish are caught from Lake 1 or 3; they must be returned safely to Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish).

Lake 3 (Mixed)

The Hadlow College team consisting of 2 x staff and 16 x students, led by Brian Bailey - Commercial Fisheries Manager, arrived on a glorious Tuesday 15th October equipped with both Seine nets and electro-fishing equipment. One Catfish of some 8lbs was caught and rehomed to Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish) while 3 x double figure Carp found a new home in Lake 1 (Carp).

Let the search begin

A great result……

Lake 1 (Carp)

On a wet and drizzly 21st October another Hadlow College group consisting of 3 x staff and 14 x students, again led by Brian Bailey - Commercial Fisheries Manager, arrived equipped with Seine nets, electro-fishing equipment, saws and loppers. Two alternating groups focused on (a) clearing overhanging branches from Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish) and (b) removing some 150lbs of Carp to 9lbs plus some 50lbs of silver fish for rehoming to Lake 3 (Mixed). Of note many smaller Carp weighing around a 1 lb to 2lbs each and were 2 to 3 years old indicating successful breeding of Carp in Lake 1.

When there is a will there is a way!

Disappointingly Cats are still breeding and appearing in Lake 1 (Carp) as some 10 x small Cats (including two in the 8lbs range) were caught. These were all safely rehomed to Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish).

Going forward, we request that we all remain vigilant and in the event of a Cat being caught from Lake 1 or 3 it be unharmed and relocated to Lake 2.

Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish)

A Hadlow College team of 3 x staff, led by Brian Bailey - Commercial Fisheries Manager, and 16 students arrived on Tuesday 12th November equipped with Seine nets, electro-fishing equipment, saws and loppers. Two alternating groups focused on (a) clearing overhanging branches from Lake 1 (Carp) and (b) removing some 150lbs+ of fish including 34 x Carp under 10lbs, Roach and Rudd to Lake 3 (Mixed).

2019 Results for Manor Fishery PIN Awards

Each year we award every angler with a PIN to commemorate catching their first Manor Fisheries specimen fish for each species shown below noting this year success was confined only to Catfish.

Pins2.jpg

The growth of the Catfish this past year has seen many PINS awarded for 40lbs+ and we are delighted to announce the 16 x 2019 “Pin” award winners as follows:

rsz_pin_winners (2).jpg

The 1,000 lbs Club

Many of our regulars will recognise that there are times during the summer when the Cats become ravenous resulting in large total single session weights of Cats being recorded. This year was an exception, and particularly during May, June and July when day and night catches were significantly lower than usual – see the 2019 Catfish Report below. As a result there were no new members of the 1,000 lbs Club this year but you may be interested in recalling past winners:

rsz_1000_club_ (2).jpg

Special mention is made of the following three anglers who have twice landed over 1,000lbs in a single session:

  • Bill Phillips with 1,350lbs during May 2011 and 1,063lbs during August 2017

  • Reg Miller with 1,592lbs during June 2016 and 1,071lbs during June 2017

  • Steve Hyder with 1,387lbs during July 2015 and 1,187lbs during June 2018

 2019 Catfish Report

As mentioned earlier, Cat fishing was challenging this year throughout May, June and July when both day and night Catfish catches were significantly lower than expected. It can be seen from the picture below that the regular annual removal of small Cats has resulted in a further 33% increase in 40lbs+ Cats caught this year. Nevertheless the overall May through July catches this season plummeted by a disappointing 37% seasonal (6-months) decrease in Cats caught weighing over 30lbs.

Cat Records.jpg

The three main factors that have contributed to disappointing May, June and July Catfish catches include:

  1. Unsettled weather from May to July that was relatively dry with long periods of high pressure.

  2. Occasional excessive ground baiting.

  3. The appearance of many Carp typically ranging from 1lb to 3lbs plus numerous small Rudd.

There is little we can do to control (1) but the Rule change banning Spods and ground baiting Spoons should help to address (2) and reduce the introduction of unnecessary and excess bait. Next month we will report on completed actions associated with (3) and the removal of surplus Carp, Rudd and Catfish.

From the following tables it can be see which months on average produce most catches for the heavier Cats.
