COVID-19

From Thursday 5th November HMG introduced Lockdown-2 which we all hope ends positively and does not drag on too long. While we await further news keep well and keep safe.

Past 5-years Specimen Lakes 1 and 2 Summary

Last month, the October News Letter included a detailed summary of the number of Carp weighing 20lbs or more and the number of Catfish weighing 30lbs or more being caught and recorded by anglers in the Cabin logbook. The information covering the past 5 years may also help to identify the most productive months for catching Carp and Catfish.

Increasing number of Lake 2 Break Offs

Due to the Cats becoming heavier and stronger, the number of break offs has markedly increased and even when using lines stronger than the minimum 20lbs breaking strain required. It will be well worth while replacing your line for the 2021 season. An abrasion resistant monofilament is recommended and a brand you may wish to consider is Berkley Trilene Mono XL which is also sensibly priced:

line.png

A growing number of Cats have also been lost due to the straightening of poor-quality hooks. Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish) hooks should be barbless and forged (not wire or Cat hooks). A strong hook with a larger eye than most brands; that is competitively priced, can be sourced from Wicked Rigs (Hand Made in the UK). This is an eBay seller (kevash123uk) and their eBay ID is: 192301880534

Maintenance Summary

The fishery has closed for the winter but there is on-going maintenance required before reopening on Saturday 13th March 2021:

  • Daily fish feeding for all the lakes

  • Lake Management

    • Due to Lockdown-2, the 9th November plan to focus on Lake 3 (Mixed) and remove Cats and larger Carp with the help of Hadlow College has been cancelled and is being rearranged.

  • Grounds, Lakes, Apartments and Cabin Maintenance

    • A Work Party was formed on Wednesday 11th November to carry out essential maintenance to reduce the number of break offs and expose more sunlight to previously over grown areas of the lakes. We extend our thanks to volunteers David and Jason Hodge, who both arrived armed with chain saws, plus Jason Tuckey and Terry Keard who all worked tirelessly during sunny weather to remove an enormous quantity of trees/branches from Lake 3 (Mixed) and Lake 1 (Carp).

  • The Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish) ski slope swim has been upgraded. All the upgraded swims contain concrete and the use of a rod pod is ideal. Although the use of bank sticks is still fine, when fishing near to the water’s edge please avoid damage through banging into the concrete which will also scare the fish away from your swim. Alternatively, you can locate your rods (and bank sticks) further back from the water’s edge to completely avoid the concrete.

Past 5-years Specimen Lakes 1 and 2 Summary

Lake-1 (Carp)

The number of Carp caught weighing 20lbs or more is recorded by anglers in the Cabin logbook. The 2019/2020 comparison, due to COVID-19 shortening our season, is on a pro rata basis of 4½ months vs 6 months. Based upon these returns, it can be seen that the numbers are increasing after a poor 2019. Below is a detailed summary of Carp weighing 20lbs or more caught over the past 5 years which may help to identify the most productive months for catching Carp.

Lake 2 (carp/Catfish)

The number of Catfish caught weighing 30lbs or more is recorded by anglers in the Cabin logbook. As can be seen below, the number of Cats caught during our shortened season weighing over 30lbs or more has increased. The comparison this year, due to COVID-19, is on a pro rata basis of 4½ months vs 6 months. Summary

As we came to the end of our 2020 season it was good to again welcome our many regulars (and new) visitors during this shortened fishing month (11-days only) with several new PB’s being achieved.

  • Daily fish feeding for all three lakes

  • Management of all three lakes with the help of Hadlow College

  • Maintenance of the grounds, lakes, Apartments and Cabin.

Lake 1 (Carp)

Based on catches recorded by anglers in the Cabin Logbook, the October (11-days) Carp reports include two twenties - a Mirror weighing 20lbs caught by Charlie King and a Common weighing 20lbs 13ozs caught by Harry Montgomery.

  • Paul Osell arrived on the 26th September for a short break and in very wet and windy conditions first targeted the Cats on Lake 2 and landed a PB Cat weighing 28lbs. Moving next day on the 1st October to Lake 1, when the weather was still challenging, Paul was successful in catching 2 x Commons weighing 18lbs and 12lbs plus a 15lbs Mirror.

Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish)

This month Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish) has again been in great form and based on catches recorded by anglers in the Cabin Logbook, the September Catfish reports include 11 weighing over 40lbs and 83+ weighing over 30lbs.

As can be seen below, the number of Cats caught weighing over 30lbs has increased. The comparison this year, due to COVID-19 shortening our season, is on a pro rata basis of 4½ months vs 6 months. Next month we will publish a more detailed summary of 30lbs+ Cats caught over the past 5 years which may help to identify the best months for catching Cats.

Cat Stats.png

Due to the Cats are becoming heavier and stronger, the number of break offs has markedly increased and even when using lines stronger than the minimum 20lbs breaking strain required. An abrasion resistant monofilament brand you may wish to consider is Berkley Trilene Mono XL which is also sensibly priced:
