Fishery Maintenance

Daily fish feeding

With the fishery now open daily fish feeding for all three lakes has stopped.

Lakes Management

A Hadlow College team arrived on the 23rd March led by Brian Bailey - Commercial Fisheries Manager with a skeleton crew of 4 students equipped with Seine and landing nets. Following two hauls they succeeded in making a 270lbs reduction to the lake biomass. In total some 170lbs of smaller Catfish were removed for relocation to a private Midlands fishery and 7 x double figure Carp to 20lbs were relocated to Lake 1 (Carp).

Swim Repairs

This month having just repaired swims, anglers have already caused unnecessary damage requiring repeat repairs.

Several swims contain concrete for strength where the use of a rod pod is ideal. Although the use of bank sticks is still fine, when fishing near to the water’s edge avoid damage through banging into the concrete which will also scare fish away from your swim. Locate your rods (and bank sticks) in the water and further back from the water’s edge to completely avoid the concrete.

Stray leads/hooks

When carrying out maintenance work many stray leads/hooks were retrieved from over-hanging branches. In spite of fixed leads and Cat hooks being banned, it was disappointing to come across several of these rigs. If in doubt as to what constitutes a Running Ledger see www.manor-fisheries.co.uk/fixed-or-running-ledgers. Better still, dispense with a lead clip and use a more fish friendly Run-Ring.

Run Ring.png

A Running lead is the most basic ledger rig possible. It is fish friendly (safe) and almost a guaranteed catcher.

The main line must be able to run freely when there is a take.

That is why we recommend it!!

Keeping with the simplicity theme, we believe the easiest and the best way of attaching a lead is a “Running lead” setup. To do this simply thread the lead onto the mainline, then a bead and swivel and then tie on your hook length/hook (40lbs braid for Cats).

This running ledger rig, with exception of the knotless knot, has been used for almost hundreds of years in one guise or another and cannot be beaten if you are fishing close range or you are stalking. If you are specimen fishing for Carp, Cats or Tench this is the rig to be used at Manor Fisheries. It is simple and effective and allows concentration on more important things such as watercraft and bait placement.

Please note Membership will be withdrawn from any angler found using a bolt rig (fixed lead) or Cat hook and there will be no exception.

Rules Reminder

With the 2021 season just beginning, this is a good time to remind all anglers that it is important to abide by all the Manor Fisheries Rules including:

Arrival/Departure Times – Rule 4

Day fishing is arrival at Manor Fisheries (not Swims or Car Park) from 7.00 am onwards and departure from Manor Fisheries (not Swims or Car Park) by 7.00 pm.

Tackle – all lakes – Rule 6

“Use Barbless hooks only – no crushed or microbarb or Cat or Circle hooks”.

Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish) is stocked with Cats averaging 30lbs+ plus many double figure Carp to 34lbs+ and long-pointed Cat hooks (see below) are banned as they can damage the Carp.

Cat Hook.jpg

Fixed or Running Ledgers – Rule 6

Use only “Running” ledgers. No lead-clips, fixed rigs, bolt rigs, semi bolt rigs, zig rigs, chod rigs, helicopter rigs, elasticated method feeders, lead core or heavy Ebro style fishing tackle

NEWS 1 February 2021 to 28 February 2021

Introduction to Winter and Summer

February Winter

Winter arrived fully this month and some grounds maintenance plans were unfortunately delayed. Hopefully, there will soon be a sustained period of rain free weather for the grounds to recover before Opening again on Saturday 13th March.

We will continue ensure that we are Never knowingly over crowded as reservation requests for accommodation, fishing and 2021 membership has been much higher than all previous years due to the continued COVID -19 Lockdown.

 Late Summer last year

Have a look at the latest video created by the well-known specimen angler, journalist and photographer Duncan Charman, when he landed a 42lbs 8ozs Catfish during his late Summer 2020 visit. Why not reserve a Swim and relax in an uncrowded environment and possibly raise your Carp or Catfish PB whilst enjoying beautiful countryside?

COVID-19

HMG has decided that angling is a permitted activity under the present Lockdown conditions with one other person. This has been permitted under the daily exercise rules and as with all aspects of the coronavirus restrictions, no groups are allowed so please keep well away from fellow anglers. Night fishing (and match fishing) presently not allowed.

The Angling Trust submitted a case to government for the early and full resumption of all forms of angling including night fishing and competitions and these will now be possible from Monday 29th March.

The Angling Trust website has comprehensive information about all the limitations caused by COVID-19 and for more information visit  https://anglingtrust.net/covid-19/

Should there be a COVID-19 “Lockdown” prior to your arrival, we will contact you to discuss returning monies paid or if you choose, retain your monies for a 2022 visit at 2021 rates. Keep well and keep safe.

2021 Membership

Manor Fisheries is a 100% Members only Fishery for all anglers aged 18 years old or more. An application for 2021 Membership can be made online at https://www.manor-fisheries.co.uk/night-fishing.

This year we are experiencing both earlier and increased numbers of reservations. This has resulted in the remaining spaces for 2021 Memberships filling much faster than previous years, noting they are allocated on a “First come, first served” basis.

There are two Membership 2021 (Jan to Dec) categories and numbers are strictly limited:

  1. Member - can fish any lake. The 2021 Membership fee is £35.00 – ALMOST FULL.

  2. Lake 3 Member - limited to fishing Lake 3. The 2021 Lake 3 Membership fee is £15.00.

Increasing Lake 2 Break Offs

Due to the Cats becoming heavier and stronger, the number of break offs has markedly increased and even when using lines stronger than the minimum 20lbs breaking strain required. It will be well worth while replacing your line for the 2021 season. An abrasion resistant monofilament is recommended and a brand you may wish to consider is Berkley Trilene Mono XL which is also sensibly priced:

Picture5.png

A growing number of Cats have also been lost due to the straightening of poor-quality hooks. Hooks for Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish) should be barbless and forged (not wire or Cat hooks). A strong hook with a larger eye than most brands (good for making hair rigs); that is competitively priced, can be sourced from Wicked Rigs (Hand Made in the UK). This is an eBay seller (kevash123uk) and their eBay ID is: 192301880534.

Fishery Maintenance

Maintenance Summary

The fishery is closed for the winter but there is on-going maintenance required before reopening on Saturday 13th March 2021:

  • Daily fish feeding for all three lakes continues when the lakes are not frozen.

  • Lakes Management

    • Due to COVID-19 restrictions, waiting to reset dates.

  • Grounds, Lakes, Apartments and Cabin Maintenance

    • This month the focus was again on Lake 3 (Mixed) and additionally Lake 1 (Carp) and Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish) to clear dead branch/leaf litter and reduce the islands of over-hanging branches. This has resulted in exposing more light to the water surface and a reduction in stray rigs becoming snagged.

When carrying out this work many stray leads/hooks were retrieved from over-hanging branches.

Please note Membership will be withdrawn from any angler found using a bolt rig (fixed lead) or Cat hook and there will be no exception.

NEWS 1 January 2021 to 31 January 2021

Introduction

Following considerable rain and occasional heavy frost his month has resulted in the grounds becoming very soft with raised water levels on all three lakes to create gentle overflows. Already the Canadian and Greylag geese have returned together with several Coots. Also, it was a welcome sight to see three swans staking out their possible territory. Hopefully, they will return and nest this year.

Possibly due to COVID -19 and the continued Lockdown, the demand for accommodation and 2021 Membership has been much higher than all previous years. Nevertheless, we will continue to endeavour that we are Never knowingly over crowded.

COVID-19

From 5th January HMG introduced Lockdown-3 which we all hope ends positively and does not drag on for too long. While now currently in Tier 5; HMG has decided that angling is a permitted activity under the present Lockdown conditions. This has been permitted under the daily exercise rules and as with all aspects of the coronavirus restrictions, no groups are allowed so please keep well away from fellow anglers. The information covering the past 5 years may also help to identify the most productive months for catching Manor Fisheries Carp and Catfish.

2020 Interest in Angling Growth

Over the past year the general consensus is interest and participation in angling has increased significantly and this may be due to the knock-on effect of Lockdown and COVID-19.  Unfortunately, to accommodate this growth it is probable that some Fisheries will become even more over-crowded during 2021.

For our 2021 season we welcome confirming we will continue to be “Never knowingly over crowded”. Last May our website experienced a surge in Page Views after coming out of Lockdown as can be seen in the table below. Displayed is a summary of the Manor Fisheries 2020 website traffic that seems to support a growth interest in angling. Compared with 2019, the number of 2020 annual Visitors and Unique Visitors have increased by 49% and 25% overall respectively and especially from May onwards with the most popular content being:

  • Home Tab – 32,500 page views

Fishery Maintenance

Maintenance Summary

The fishery has closed for the winter but there is on-going maintenance required before reopening on Saturday 13th March 2021:

  • This month a further 500 Kg of high quality fish feed arrived and daily fish feeding for all the lakes continues

  • Lake Management

    • Due to COVID-19, a further netting session with the help of Hadlow College and set for the 7th December; has unfortunately been cancelled when the plan was to focus on Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish) and remove surplus Cats. This session is being rearranged for 2021.

  • Grounds, Lakes, Apartments and Cabin Maintenance

    • The Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish) ski slope swim has been upgraded. All the upgraded swims contain concrete and the use of a rod pod is ideal. Although the use of bank sticks is still fine, when fishing near to the water’s edge please avoid damage through banging into the concrete which will also scare the fish away from your swim. Alternatively, you can locate your rods (and bank sticks) further back from the water’s edge to completely avoid the concrete.
