Fishery Maintenance

Introduction

The grounds have become very soft this month following considerable rain and occasional heavy frost. The Canadian and Greylag geese, together with a lone white goose, have returned plus several Coots which have joined the many resident Mallards and Moorhens.

Maintenance Summary

Since closing the fishery for the winter, the recent wet weather has hampered several planned maintenance days. Nevertheless, good progress has continued with:

  • Daily fish feeding for all the lakes using the remainder of 1,000kg high quality feed.

  • With valuable help from David Hodge, Lakes Management continued including completion of cutting back many overhanging trees on all three lakes. As part of our lakes management program, arrangements are planned to net Lake 3 (Mixed) during March as the date set in January had been rearranged due to a Hadlow College member being in COVID isolation.

2022 Interest in Angling is Growing

Over the past 2-years the general consensus is interest and participation in angling has increased significantly and this may be due to the knock-on effect of Lockdown and COVID-19.  Unfortunately, to accommodate this growth it is probable that some Fisheries will become even more over-crowded during 2022.

This has resulted in the remaining spaces for 2022 Memberships filling faster than previous years, noting they are allocated on a “First come, first served” basis. We welcome confirming that during 2022 we will continue to be “Never knowingly over crowded”  by setting a limit on visitor numbers.

2022 Awards and Competitions

2022 - PIN Awards

Every angler is awarded a PIN when meeting the qualifying weight to commemorate catching their first Manor Fisheries specimen fish and for each species shown below:

2022 - Leader Board

The 2022 Leader Board competition will run throughout our 2022 Season and commence on Saturday 12th March 2022. Prizes will be awarded for the following specimens caught by or on Sunday 9th October 2022 and in the event these “Target weights” are not met, the prizes below will be awarded for the heaviest verified Carp, Catfish and Tench specimens recorded in the Cabin Logbook:

  • £50.00 for the first verified 50lbs+ Catfish

  • £50.00 for the first verified 30lbs+ Carp

  • £50.00 for the first verified 8lbs+ Tench

In addition to recording Cats weighing over 30lbs, please record Carp over 20lbs as this forms the basis of our Monthly News Report and provides valuable input to our lake management plans.

 2022 - 1,000lbs Club

Every angler landing 1,000lbs or more in a single contiguous session will awarded becoming a member of the prodigious Manor Fisheries 1,000lbs Club.

PS Which day this month saw the most number of website enquiries?

Answer: Wednesday 29th December

Lake 1 and 2 Swims

All the upgraded swims contain concrete and the use of a rod pod is ideal. Although the use of bank sticks is still fine, when fishing near to the water’s edge please avoid damage through banging into the concrete which will also scare the fish away from your swim. Alternatively, you can locate your rods (and bank sticks) further back from the water’s edge to completely avoid the concrete.

COVID-19

The Angling Trust (https://anglingtrust.net/covid-19/) submitted a case to government for the early and full resumption of all forms of angling including night fishing and competitions. This is permitted under the daily exercise rules and as with all aspects of the coronavirus restrictions, please keep far away from fellow anglers.

Should there be a COVID-19 “Lockdown” prior to your arrival, we will contact you to discuss returning monies paid or if you choose, retain your monies for a 2023 visit at 2022 rates. Keep well and keep safe.

Fishing Report – 1st October 2021 to 31st October 2021

With Autumn now in full flow, and including fuel shortages, the remaining few days of our season produced some good Carp catches:

Lake 1 (Carp) Logbook Catch Reports

  • During a short break and unsettled weather conditions, Paul Duncan used banoffee wafter baits to target the Carp and was successful catching weights of:

    • 3rd – 12lbs Common

    • 4th – 2 x Mirrors of 20lbs 2ozs and 13lbs plus a 14lbs Common

    • 6th – 18lbs 6ozs Common using spice boilies

    • 7th – 12lbs 2ozs and 4lbs 6ozs Commons using spice boilies

    • 8th – 6 x Carp using banoffee and spice wafters including Commons weighing 17lbs 8ozs, 15lbs 8ozs, 14lbs, 13lbs 10ozs (won-eye) and 10lbs plus a 11lbs 10ozs Mirror.

  • Tony Corkett returned on the 5th October and using squid pop-up bait resulted in a 20lbs 15ozs Common and a 10lbs 14ozs Mirror.

  • Regular Bryan Butler returned on a windy 6th October and landed a 14lbs Common using luncheon meat bait

  • When visiting on the 8th October Tony Cook caught a 12lbs Common using krill baits.

  • Eddie and Gary Stephens visited on the 10th October before we closed for the winter and landed 6 x Carp including weights of:

    • Eddie – 2 x Mirrors of17lbs 7ozs and 13lbs plus 2 x Commons of 18lbs 5ozs and 12lbs 2ozs.

    • Gary – a 15lbs 4ozs Mirror and a 12lbs 8ozs Common

  • During his annual break, Terry Keard landed 41 x Carp (29 x Commons and 12 x Mirrors) over 13-days from the 16th October, weighing 554lbs in total. The all Carp catch averaged 13lbs 8ozs each including 3 x 18lbs+ to 18lbs 9ozs.

Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish) Logbook Catch Reports

  • Regular Kieran Wright returned on the 1st October and caught a late season kitten weighing 8lbs 10ozs using boilie baits.

Lake 3 (Mixed) Logbook Catch Reports

  • It was the welcome return of Peter Foster on the 6th October and using sweetcorn bait Peter landed 5 x Carp including Commons weighing 8lbs, 5lbs and 4lbs plus Mirrors of 8lbs 8ozs and 8lbs.

  • Regular Matthew Smith visited on the 10th October and finished with 8 x Carp to 10lbs 11ozs plus a 14ozs Roach.

2021 Competitions and Awards

Congratulations to new Members of the Manor Fisheries Specimen Club. Each year we award every angler with a PIN to commemorate catching their first Manor Fisheries specimen fish for each species shown below.

2021 PIN awards

Congratulations to all the anglers who gained a PIN award for catching their first Manor Fisheries specimen which are shown below and special congratulations to Matthew Smith who won two PINS.

2021 Leader Board Winners

Congratulations to the winners of the Leader Board competition which ran throughout our 2021 Season from Saturday 13th March 2021 to Sunday 10th October 2021.

Increasing Lake 2 Break Offs

Due to the Cats being heavy and strong, break offs can be experienced and even when using lines stronger than the minimum 20lbs breaking strain required. It will be well worth while replacing your line for the 2022 season. An abrasion resistant monofilament is recommended and a brand you may wish to consider is Berkley Trilene Mono XL which is also sensibly priced:

 Berkley Trilene Mono XL

  • Breaking Strain – 25lbs

  • Colour – Clear

  • Length – 270 yards

  • Diameter – 0.40 mm

  • Typical Price - £12.90 plus P & P

Berkley Trilene Mono XL

  • Breaking Strain – 30lbs

  • Colour – Clear

  • Length – 250 yards

  • Diameter – 0.45 mm

  • Typical Price - £8.47 plus P & P

A growing number of Cats have also been lost due to the straightening of poor-quality hooks. Lake 2 (Carp/Catfish) hooks should be barbless and forged (not wire or Cat hooks). A strong hook with a larger eye than most brands, that eases tying a knotless knot, can be sourced from Wicked Rigs (Hand Made in the UK)

These hooks are competitively priced and Wicked Rigs is an eBay seller (kevash123uk). The eBay ID is: 19230188053
